Der systemische Lupus erythematodes (SLE) ist eine chronisch entzündliche Autoimmunerkrankung. Eine Prävalenz von etwa 40–50 Patienten unter 100.000 Einwohnern und eine Inzidenz von 2–5 neuen Fällen pro Jahr zeigen an, dass es sich hierbei nicht um eine häufige Erkrankung handelt. Allerdings ist mit der erhöhten Lebenserwartung der Patienten auch in den nächsten Jahren mit einer Zunahme der Prävalenz zu rechnen. Der SLE betrifft vornehmlich Frauen mit einer Verteilung von 4–9:1. Die Diagnosezahlen steigen mit Einsetzen der Pubertät deutlich an und erreichen ihr Maximum bei 20–35 Jahren.
