Abstract

This article deals with the possible computer applications of the Sound Approach to English phonetic alphabet. The authors review their preliminary research into some of the more promising approaches to the application of this phonetic alphabet to the processes of machine learning, computer spell-checking, etc. Applying the mathematical approach of rough sets to the development of a data-based spelling recognizer, the authors delineate the parameters of the international cooperative research project with which they have been engaged since 1997, and point the direction of both the continuation of the current project and of future studies, as well.
