Abstract
Recently there has been widespread interest in enhanced and suppressed spontaneous emission by atoms in cavities. Changes in spontaneous emission occur when the density of modes in the cavity differs from that of free space. One means of accomplishing this is to choose a cavity with dimensions comparable to a wavelength, so that the cavity mode spectrum is discrete, or below cutoff in the case of a waveguide. [1–3] Recently, we introduced an alternate approach and have observed enhanced and suppressed visible spontaneous emission of the resonance transition of Yb in a con-focal resonator with dimensions much larger than a wavelength [4]. Our experiments make use of the fact that the transverse modes of this resonator are degenerate, so that many modes are simultaneously brought into and out of resonance as the resonator is tuned.
