Abstract
Flashlamp-excited dye lasers (FEDLs) are versatile sources of coherent light. A single dye will typically tune through 50 nm or more. The same hardware can be used, with alternative dyes, to cover a spectrum of about 300 nm. Spectral bandwidths range from a few nanometers down to several femtometers (≅ 10 MHz), in pulses of picoseconds to milliseconds. The basic technology is relatively simple, and many experimenters have built FEDLs. The medium is inexpensive and easy to renew. It has high heat capacity, and the active volume can be replaced between pulses. As much as 400 J/pulse, and 1.2 kW average power in a burst mode, have been obtained, and much potential remains.
