Anionic Surfactants

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Anthropogenic Compounds ((HEC3,volume 3 / 3F))

Summary

The various types of anionic surfactants are listed and the five most used types are dealt with in detail. More attention is given to linear alkyl benzene sulfonates (LAS), since they are used more than any other surfactant and more data have been reported on them. The structure, methods of production and application of each type are presented and relevant analytical methods are summarized. The legislation regulating their use is explained and their routes to and fate in the various environmental sectors are discussed. Their impact on the aquatic and soil environment has been assessed by comparing evidence of their concentrations in the various environmental sectors with those concentrations which produce observed effects on appropriate aquatic organisms. It is concluded that no environmental problems arise from the use of present-day anionic surfactants.
