Summary
The crossflow induced laminar-turbulent transition of a 3-D flat-plate boundary-layer flow is investigated by means of spatial direct numerical simulations based on the complete incompressible 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and a combined 6th-order compact Finite-Difference / spanwise Fourier-spectral scheme. The considered spanwise-invariant laminar base flow is a model of the boundary-layer flow in the front region of an infinite swept wing, with favorable and ensuing adverse chordwise pressure gradient. The secondary instability of (i) a saturated steady crossflow-vortex packet and (ii) a saturated unsteady crossflow-wave packet is investigated in detail. For (i), transition delay by means of a 3-D upstream flow deformation is presented.
