Abstract

MPLS is a new technology that has been proposed by the IETF community and is one of the most appropriate techniques to provide connectionless IP services over powerful ATM switches. One of the most important issues in designing MPLS switches based on ATM is VC merging. With VC merging all incoming cells belonging to the same destination receive the same outgoing VC values. There are two kinds of VC merging called “full merging” and “partial merging”. Full merging does not have the ability to support different QoS classes. However, in partial merging we are able to support multiple QoS classes. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a partial VC merger with the ability to support Differentiated Services and derive some equations for calculating the mean waiting time in the output ports of a VC merger.
