Abstract

It is no secret that people are predisposed to form impressions of a person’s character, intentions, abilities, and social status based on nothing more than that person’s physical appearance. Although these impressions are often discounted, they serve a number of important social functions, including informing physical self-presentations. This article outlines some of the advantages that a facial trait perception system would offer social agents and presents a review of my research in modeling the trait impressions of the face using Principal Component Analysis (PCA).
