Abstract

We have already noted in Chaps. 1 and 2 that the breakdown phenomenon has empirically been studied by many scientific groups in various countries (e.g., [30,37,58,59,61–79,182]). In three-phase traffic theory, the breakdown phenomenon is explained by a first-order local F→S transition [205, 208]. A qualitative theory of this phenomenon has been discussed in Chap. 5.
