Charmonium Production in 920 GeV Proton-Nucleus Interactions

Abstract

Using data collected by the HERA-B experiment in the short commissioning run in the year 2000, we have studied the charmonium production in interactions of 920 GeV protons with carbon and titanium targets (\(\sqrt{s}=41.6GeV\)). We measured the fraction of J / ψ’s produced via radiative χ c decays \(R_{\chi_c} = 0.32 \pm 0.06_{stat.} \pm 0.04_{syst.}\) averaged over proton-carbon and proton-titanium collisions [1]. The result is in agreement with previous measurements. It is compared with theoretical predictions. We present also preliminary results for J/ψ differential cross sections in x F and p T , which demonstrate the unique ability of HERA-B to study charmonium nuclear suppression in the backward hemisphere.
