Abstract
Reliable turn-key high-power ultrafast laser sources are required for a variety of applications in science, industry, and medicine. Fiber-based laser systems have the potential to fulfill this requirement. In this Chapter the possibilities of rare-earth doped fibers for the amplification of ultrashort pulses are discussed. Novel concepts to overcome limitations due to nonlinear effects are presented.
