Investigation of Wall and Support Interference Using Two TWIG Models of Different Scale

New Results in Numerical and Experimental Fluid Mechanics IV

Summary

The flow about a 3D model in a wind tunnel is influenced by the walls and by the model suspension. This has to be accounted for by corrections. The transonic tunnel of DNW Göttingen is equipped with a two-dimensional adaptive test section of 1 ×1 m 2, with flexible top and bottom walls, for 2D and for 3D measurements. For 3D models, the Wedemeyer/Lamarche method is taken for wall adjustment, and this adaptation method produces zero wall interference on the test section centreline. For off-centreline points, residuals can be determined by a wall pressure method, and averages can be taken for corrections. Two models of different scale were used together with 3 different types of support. Nominally, interference-free results were available from NLR-HST. Comparison of present results with the reference data shows the quality of the results, and also the limits of model size. The influence of the different supports was identified.
