Summary
The generation of a basic dataset as the key issue in the pre-design process of an airbreathing upper stage is presented. The integration of the airbreathing propulsion system into the upper stage of a Two-Stage-to-Orbit (TSTO) showed a strong coupling between the aerodynamics and the propulsion system. By sticking to the bookkeeping conventions a complete dataset for all flight conditions has been established, which allowed an optimisation of the configuration and a sensitivity analysis as the basis for a design evaluation.
