Abstract

As is well known, convection is said to be free or natural if it is caused only by buoyancy due to temperature differences; it is called forced if it is caused only by external forces; and it is called mixed if both causes act simultaneously. Earlier investigations of natural [1, 2] and mixed and forced [3, 4] convection do not give sufficient data for a characterization of the hydrodynamic flow conditions. This is a consequence of the limited accuracy and resolution of traditional flow measuring instruments such as the Pitot tube and the hot-wire anemometer. Laser Doppler Anemometers, on the other hand, should offer sufficient information for a description of the flow patterns.
