Polarization and Depolarization in the Fiber-Optic Gyroscope

  • Conference paper

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Optical Sciences ((SSOS,volume 32))

Abstract

From the scattering matrix of a general N-mode fiberoptic ring interferometer conditions are derived for gyro operation with stable zero point and stable scale factor. The discussion includes reciprocity, polarization filtering, stray light suppression, polarization adjustment and control, birefringence effects in optical fibers, nonreciprocity by magnetic field, polarization-holding fibers, and polarization scrambling by a depolarizer.
