Abstract

To be invited to give the Introductory talk at a Conference of this nature is, indeed, a great honour, and in accepting such an invitation one is very conscious of the challenge it presents. For, to survey the field from the published literature is to condemn oneself to be at least a year out of date, and to attempt to summarise what we shall hear in the next few days is, for obvious reasons, impossible.
