Electronic Raman Scattering

Abstract

Semiconductors contain a wide variety of electronic excitations, and many of them can be studied by Raman scattering techniques. They form the subject of this article. Excluded is the class of deep-level electronic transitions associated with transition-metal or rare earth atoms in semiconductors or oxides. Included are almost all the excitations of shallow levels in semiconductors that have been observed experimentally or proposed theoretically, with the important exception of excitations in a magnetic field. Thus spin-flip excitations in a magnetic field will not be discussed, except for a few comments at the end in Section 4.6.
