Ob in der Freizeit oder im Beruf — Computer werden immer mehr zu einem Bestandteil unserer alltäglichen Erfahrung. Sie tauchen als Bildschirmarbeitsplätze (im Jahre 2005 nutzten 57% aller Deutschen am Arbeitsplatz einen PC, BITKOM 2006c) und Heimcomputer (58% der deutschen Bevölkerung hatten 2005 einen Internetzugang, BITCOM 2006a) auf. Computer „verstecken“ sich aber auch in vielen Geräten. Im Freizeitbereich findet man sie in Digitalkameras, Fahrzeugnavigationssystemen, Mobiltelefonen (95% der Deutschen besaßen in 2005 ein Mobiltelefon, BITCOM 2006b), MP3-Player, Harddisk-Rekorder, Interaktivem Fernsehen, Radioweckern, programmierbaren Kochherden, Waschmaschinen, Hausautomatisierung, Kinderspielzeug, Fahrkartenautomaten, Informationskioske etc. Im professionellen Umfeld finden sich Computer in Schweißmaschinen, Laserschneidegeräten, Ultraschallgeräten, Motorenprüfsystemen, Sachbearbeitersoftware, Content-Management-Systemen (CMS), Projektiersoftware für automatisierungstechnische Anlagen, betriebswirtschaftliche Software etc. Computer halten Einzug in die unterschiedlichsten Bereiche des Lebens.
