Development of the theory of motion for systems with Coulomb friction
The phenomenon of sliding friction was first studied experimentally in the end of eighteenth century by the French physicist G. Amontons (1663’1705) who discovered the dependence of the force of friction on the surface characteristics of the contacting bodies. The laws of friction were formulated nearly a hundred years later by C.A. Coulomb (1736–1806), . The essence of Coulomb’s formulation is as follows.
