Continuum damage mechanics in its carly stage of development of used scalar damage parameter introduced in 1958 by Kachnov. It corresponds to nucleation and growth of micro-voids and an initially isotropic material remains istropic. This approach, relatively simple, proved in many cases useful for rough estimation of the life-time of structures.
