Abstract

The application of sub-Doppler spectroscopic methods to optical frequency standards has stimulated many efforts to improve our knowledge of the line shapes in order to provide realistic estimates of the accuracy. In this paper we shall consider four directions of recent progress:

  1. 1-

the recoil structure of the saturation resonances

  2. 2-

transit effects on the line shapes and especially curvature-induced shifts

  3. 3-

the influence of weak elastic collisions in saturation spectroscopy

  4. 4-

the use of RAMSEY interference fringes in Doppler-free two-photon and saturation spectroscopies.
