Abstract

Dioxetanes [1] are four membered ring compounds that are known to decompose thermally according to (1)

The products are only carbonyl compounds, and light emission (at about 420 nm) is observed in both gas phase and liquid solution. The nature of the electronic excited states involved is not quite clear, as the chemiluminescence spectrum does not agree with either the singlet or the triplet of emission of the products. In solution, the species induces reactions that are usually brought upon by triplet sensitization.
