Zusammenfassung

War das tägliche Brot jahrtausendelang knapp mit der Folge, dass verheerende Hungersnöte Millionen Menschen dahinrafft en, so hat sich heute der Traum vom Schlaraff enland für die Menschen in den Industrienationen erfüllt. Allerdings stehen wir nun unerwartet vor einer Fülle neuer Probleme, wie die Prävalenzzahlen für Essstörungen zeigen. Während die Versorgungslage mehr als ausreichend ist, orientiert sich die Bevölkerung an einem Schlankheitsideal im Bereich des beginnenden Untergewichts. Der Wunsch, schlank zu sein, motiviert Millionen von Menschen zu einer freiwillig reduzierten Nahrungsaufnahme.

Miss America wird immer dünner …“ Lag der BMI der Miss America der 1920er Jahre zwischen 20 und 25, so sank er in den vergangenen Jahren auf bis zu 16,9 (Rubinstein u. Caballero 2000) und damit in den Bereich der anorektischen Symptomatik. Je dünner, desto schöner???
