Die Harnwegsinfektion ist die häufigste entzündliche Erkrankung in der Gynäkologie und Geburtshilfe und zugleich eine der häufigsten Komplikationen gynäkologischer Eingriffe. Sie ist durch die unphysiologische Präsenz und Vermehrung von Mikroorganismen im Harntrakt gekennzeichnet, wobei sehr unterschiedliche Krankheitsbilder resultieren können. Das Spektrum reicht von der Urethritis über die nach Aszension resultierende symptomatische akute Zystitis bis zu akuten, chronischen oder rezidivierenden Pyelonephritiden, wobei das Rezidiv durch das Wiederauftreten desselben Erregers wie bei der Erstinfektion charakterisiert ist.
