Zervizitis-, Endometritis- und Salpingitis-Adnexitis sind häufig weder ätiologisch noch klinisch noch im therapeutischen Vorgehen voneinander zu trennen. Der im internationalen Schrifttum übliche Begriff »pelvic inflammatory disease« drückt aus, dass pathomorphologisch als Begleitentzündungen auch Parametritis, Perimetritis, Peritonitis/ Perihepatitis ( Fitz-Hugh-Curtis-Syndrom)/Perinephritis/ Perisplenitis sowie Tuboovarialabszess, -komplex und der sog. Douglas-Abszess hinzukommen können. Das Erregerspektrum ist polymikrobiell und zwingt in der Praxis bereits vor Erhalt des Kulturergebnisses zu einer Therapie auf empirischer Basis.
