Der Diabetes mellitus ist mit einer Prävalenz von etwa 3% eine der am häufigsten auftretenden Komplikationen der Gravidität. Schwangerschaften bei Frauen mit Diabetes mellitus sind Risikoschwangerschaften. Der Gestationsdiabetes ist eine erstmals in der Schwangerschaft festgestellte Glukosestoffwechselstörung und wird wegen des unterschiedlichen Morbiditäts- und Mortalitätsrisikos von einem vorbestehenden Diabetes mellitus Typ 1 oder Typ 2 abgegrenzt.
