As mentioned in the Introduction, a big impetus was given to the study of Ga-actions by the appearance of Bass’s 1984 paper, which showed that, in contrast to the situation for A2, there exist algebraic actions of Ga on A3 which cannot be conjugated to a triangular action. Since then, our understanding of the dimension three case has expanded dramatically, though it remains far from complete.
