Let us imagine a particular worker residing in a particular location in a city and a particular job existing in a different location in the same city. Then, ‘spatial interaction’ may be defined here as the following hierarchical choice process. The first step is the negotiation of a bilateral employment contract between the worker identified by his or her place of residence and the employer identified by his or her place of business. The second step is the daily process of commuting by the contracted worker to and from his or her place of work. The recognition of these two steps helps us to understand the dynamics of spatial interaction. In practice, the totals for the first step, location decisions, enable the usage of the available building stock for housing and employment to be assessed spatially, whereas the totals for the second step, travel decisions, have implications for usage of the transport network and its design.
