Motivation for Knowledge Management

Abstract

A significant number of companies have by now recognized the potential of improvement that lies in a conscious dealing with knowledge. According to this notion, various projects involving knowledge management have been initiated during the last years, most of them starting with solutions based on information technology designed to support business processes as well as an efficient exchange of knowledge. The implementation of a special technology appears to be a simple and quick solution for pressing problems, e.g. if relevant knowledge is not available for the employees, or if important experiences once made are not being utilized for follow-up projects. Soon, however, many enthusiasts will discover that, by introducing a solution focused on information technology, not all problems can be dealt with in a satisfactory way. Furthermore, new problems occur through the introduction of the IT system itself, e.g. if employees refuse to work with it. It is at this point at the latest that the matter of the employees’ mtivation becomes relevant.
