Abstract

Information and communication are basic activities that support and permit the functioning and development of a society. Moreover, patterns of information and communication make it possible to define and distinguish societies. This is true on many levels, starting with the small-scale societal ‘family’, but also including large-scale societies, such as cultures and possibly — though not always — nationstates.
