Das zunehmende Interesse an öffentlichen Soziologien kennzeichnet eine wachsende Lücke zwischen dem Ethos der Soziologen und sozialen, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Tendenzen in der Gesellschaft allgemein. Die öffentliche Soziologie zielt darauf ab, die öffentliche Debatte über moralische und politische Fragen durch das Einbringen soziologischer Theorie und Forschung zu bereichern. Sie ist von der policy- oder anwendungsorientierten, der professionellen und der kritischen Soziologie zu unterscheiden.
