Die emotionssoziologischen Arbeiten Steven L. Gordons bergen eine Überraschung in sich: Der Titel seines bekanntesten Aufsatzes Social Structural Effects on Emotions (Gordon 1990) legt die Vermutung nahe, er sei ein Vertreter jener strukturalistischen Strömung, die Emotionen als das Resultat der Stellung von Personen oder Gruppen in einem Netzwerk sozialer Beziehungen ansieht (vgl. Neckel 2006: 129).
