Zusammenfassung
Die Beziehungen der Volksrepublik China zu Afrika haben eine wechselvolle Geschichte. Zu Beginn der 1950er Jahre bestimmten politische Kriterien die Entwicklungshilfe. Neben ideologischen Motiven (antiimperialistisch, antikolonialistisch) spielten auch machtpolitische Erwägungen eine Rolle: Die Volksrepublik China brauchte Unterstützung, um in den Vereinten Nationen als einzige legitime Vertretung des Landes anerkannt zu werden und Taiwan zu verdrängen – was 1971 gelang. Bekanntestes Projekt dieser frühen Zusammenarbeit war die Tansania-Sambia-Eisenbahn („Tazara“). Nach dem Ende der Kulturrevolution (1976) folgte ein eher pragmatischer Ansatz. Ab 1989 verstärkte die chinesische Regierung auf der Suche nach Unterstützung gegen die internationale Isolierung nach dem Tiananmen-Massaker die Bemühungen um gute Beziehungen zu afrikanischen Regierungen (Yu 2009: 9–16; Davies 2007: 36–39).
