Abstract
Der Beitrag widmet sich den immer populärer werdenden Online-Spielen. Diese werden im Folgenden als Spiele definiert, die im oder über das Internet gespielt werden. Um die vielfältigen Formen dieser Online-Spiele systematisch voneinander abzugrenzen, zeigt der Beitrag zunächst einen Klassifizierungsansatz auf. Anschließend werden die wichtigsten kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Forschungsansätze zum Thema dargelegt. Dafür folgen die Ausführungen einer analytischen Trennung in prä-, peri- und postrezeptive Phase. Beginnend mit der prä-rezeptiven Phase beschäftigt sich der Beitrag mit Erkenntnissen zu Nutzungs- und Selektionsgründen von Online-Spielen. Im Hinblick auf die peri-rezeptive Phase, die die Zeit während der Nutzung beschreibt, stehen in erster Linie die verschiedenen Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten während des Spielens im Vordergrund. Bezüglich der post-rezeptiven Phase werden die möglichen Wirkungen – positiver wie negativer Natur – diskutiert. Der Beitrag schließt mit einer kritischen Reflexion des aktuellen Standes der kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Forschung zum Thema ‚Online- Spiele’ und gibt, daraus abgeleitet, einen Ausblick auf zukünftige Herausforderungen, denen sich die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung stellen muss.
