Zusammenfassung
Diese scheinbar triviale Frage ermöglicht uns zwei erste Zugriffe auf Robertsons Werk. Zum einen ist sie ein Hinweis auf dessen theoriegeschichtliche Einbettung. ‚Who now reads Spencer?‘ fragte Talcott Parsons (1937) in seinem Werk The Structure of Social Action. Diese latent provokative Frage wurde Parsons oft entgegengehalten und in ein ‚Who now reads Parsons?‘ abgewandelt. Robertson ist bemüht, diese Linie nicht fortzusetzen, und gegenüber Parsons, auf dessen intellektuellen Schultern er steht, despektierlich zu klingen. Ganz im Gegenteil, er bemüht sich, die Systemtheorie Parsons für die eigene Globalisierungstheorie fruchtbar zu machen und somit vielmehr ein ‚How to read Parsons?‘ zum unterschwelligen Kompass seines Nachdenkens über die Welt als Ganze zu machen (vgl. Turner/Robertson 1991). Dieses Verhältnis zu Parsons’ Theorie ist, noch vor allen Auseinandersetzungen über die Rolle von Kultur im Globalisierungsprozess, ein erster Scheidepunkt zwischen Robertson und seinen Hauptkonkurrenten um die Ausrichtung einer global orientierten Soziologie für das 21. Jahrhundert, Immanuel Wallerstein und Anthony Giddens.
