Zusammenfassung
Eine der Grundannahmen der soziologischen Netzwerktheorie lautet, dass der Kontext zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen entscheidend zur Erklärung menschlichen Handelns beiträgt (Burt 1982; Knoke/ Kuklinski 1993: 173; Wasserman/ Faust 1993: 6ff u.a.). Als Beispiele für den Fortschritt soziologischer Forschung durch die Netzwerkanalyse werden häufig die „Small-World“-Forschung (Milgram 1967; Kochen 1989; Watts 1999) oder die Erneuerung der Rollentheorie durch die Harvardgruppe um Harrison White (White et al. 1976; Arabie/ Boorman 1982) zitiert. Einen Wermutstropfen für die Netzwerkanalyse bildet andererseits die verbreitete Überzeugung, dass egozentrierte Netzwerke wegen ihrer reduzierten Information über Beziehungsstrukturen wenig zur strukturellen Aufklärung sozialen Handelns beitragen. Diese Kritik übersieht freilich, dass die einflussreiche Untersuchung von Granovetter (1973) über die Stärke schwacher Beziehungen egozentrierte Netzwerke als Datengrundlage hatte. Außerdem schlagen egozentrierte Netzwerke eine Brücke zwischen der Netzwerkanalyse und der Umfrageforschung mit Zufallsstichproben. Ohne diese Brücke bliebe die Netzwerkforschung auf Fallanalysen mit zweifelhafter Verallgemeinerbarkeit begrenzt (Pappi 1987: 20f).
