Zusammenfassung
Weiten Teilen der Erde droht in diesem Jahrhundert eine ernste Wasserkrise: Nach Prognosen der Vereinten Nationen werden im Jahr 2050 im schlimmsten Fall etwa sieben Milliarden Menschen in 60 Ländern unter Wasserknappheit leiden, im günstigsten Fall sind es immer noch knapp zwei Milliarden in 48 Ländern. Wasser ist als Ressource für menschliches Leben durch nichts zu ersetzen und in vielen Ländern ist es zum begrenzenden Faktor deren ökonomischer Entwicklung geworden. Wasser ist also ein strategisches Gut – und ein konfliktträchtiges: Denn es wird nicht nur immer knapper, sondern es ist auf der Welt sehr ungleich verteilt und vor allem überschreitet es Grenzen. In den mehr als 200 internationalen Seen- und Flusseinzugsgebieten leben etwa 40 Prozent der Weltbevölkerung. Mithin ist Wasser auch ein Thema der internationalen Politik und ein Quell potenzieller Konflikte.
