Im Frühjahr 2007 war der Klimawandel als Thema und der „Weltklimarat“ als Beratungsinstanz nicht mehr von den Titelseiten der nationalen und internationalen Zeitungen wegzudenken. Was bei der Gründung des Intergovermental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 1988 noch unvorstellbar war, sind folgende Sachverhalte: die Veröffentlichungen seiner Sachstandsberichte (Assessment Report) landen regelmäßig auf den Titelseiten der nationalen und internationalen Presse (von „Bild“ über die „Süddeutsche“ hin zur „New York Times“). Gleichzeitig rückt der Klimawandel in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung zum Menschheitsproblem Nummer eins auf und wird zu einem Thema von höchster politischer Priorität, vergleichbar mit Themen wie Wirtschaftswachstum und Energieversorgung.
