Über die historisch-soziologische Perspektive bei der Analyse internationaler Politik zu schreiben heißt zwangsläufig, sich zu sehr Allgemeinem zu äußern, und zudem in der vorgegebenen Kürze. Dies beginnt bereits beim Begriff „Perspektive“. Es ist üblich geworden, die allgemeinste Ebene der Herangehensweise an die Analyse internationaler Politik als Groß-Theorien, Paradigmen oder Forschungsprogramme zu bezeichnen. Dazu zählen etwa Realismus, Idealismus/ Institutionalismus, Konstruktivismus und gesellschaftskritische Ansätze (vgl. List 2006, Kap.2), in durchaus unterschiedlichen Spielarten (wie etwa [neuerdings auch: neo-] klassischer und Neo-Realismus).
