Auszug
Richten wir unser Augenmerk auf zwei der grö\ten und bedeutendsten Städte in den USA: In beiden Städten bewegt sich das Image zwischen den Extremen, zwischen Metropole und Moloch. Beide sind exemplarisch dafür, was Amerikaner unter urban life verstehen. Aber genauso extrem wie die Gegensätze in diesen Städten selbst, sind die Gegensätze zwischen ihnen: Wir haben es hier mit zwei charakteristischen Formen der amerikanischen Stadt zu tun: Einerseits New York, die historische Kernstadt, deren Zentrum sehr Sinn gebend ist, ein Stadttypus der ersten Generation und bis heute die europäischste aller amerikanischen Städte. In New York konzentrieren sich auf rund 488 Quadratkilometer2 mehr als 8 Millionen Menschen, mit einer Dichte von 42.507 Einwohner pro Quadratkilometer (U.S. Census Bureau 20053) — mehr Einwohner wie keine andere Stadt in den USA. In der räumlichen Vorstellung von New York haben viele Menschen das Bild Manhattans vor Augen, das durch seinen Inselcharakter USA-weit einzigartig ist. Manhattan bildet mit seiner Dichte und seiner Konzentration an Firmen, sozialen und politischen Einrichtungen, Dienstleistungen, Wohnraum und Unterhaltungsindustrie das pulsierende Zentrum der sonst viermal so gro\en Gesamtstadt. Doch das Bild der schimmernden Wolkenkratzerfassaden trügt: Was die Konzentration von Armut angeht, so steht New York unter den ersten zehn Städten in den USA mit über 40 Prozent an Einwohnern, die knapp an bzw. unter der statistischen Armutsgrenze leben (Center for Social Inclusion 2005: 3), bei einer offiziellen Armutsrate von 19,1 Prozent (Census 2005). Zwei Drittel der Bewohner sind nicht-wei\ oder lateinamerikanischen Ursprungs (National Community Development Initiative 2003: 17)
Dazu zählen die Bezirke Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens, Brooklyn und die Bronx.
Spezifische Daten des Census Bureaus werden in fünfbzw. zehnjährigen Abschnitten erhoben, z. B. durch sog. Communty Surveys, die eine Stichprobe darstellen. Diese Angabe basiert auf Zahlen aus dem Jahr 2000.
