Die Untersuchung internationaler Politikkonvergenz hat in den letzten Jahren in der Politikwissenschaft zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen. Zwar finden sich erste Studien in diesem Bereich schon in den sechziger Jahren. Die akademische Popularität des Themas ist jedoch erst in den neunziger Jahren beträchtlich gestiegen. Diese Entwicklung ist eng verknüpft mit der verstärkten politikwissenschaftlichen Analyse der nationalen Rückwirkungen der Globalisierung und der europäischen Integration. In diesem Zusammenhang ist eine zentrale Forschungsfrage, ob und inwieweit Prozesse der Globalisierung und Europäisierung mit einer Angleichung nationaler Politiken und Strukturen einhergehen. Ungeachtet der zahlreichen inzwischen vorliegenden Analysen besteht allerdings weitgehend Einigkeit darin, dass bei der Untersuchung von Ursachen und Bedingungen internationaler Politikkonvergenz nach wie vor ein großer Forschungsbedarf besteht.
