Evolutionstheorie ist heute die zentrale Theorie des Wandels überhaupt (Müller/ Schmidt 1995). Auch Soziologie- und Managementlehre lassen sich zunehmend von evolutionstheoretischen Ideen inspirieren, und selbst in der Politikwissenschaft wird verstärkt auf evolutionstheoretische Konzepte zurückgegriffen (Axelrod 1986; Ostrom 2000; John 2003), obwohl dies zuweilen recht kritisch betrachtet wird (Dowding 2000; Kay 2003).
