Die Finanzkrise, die eine Reihe von asiatischen Ländern getroffen hat, kam für viele Beobachter überraschend. Insbesondere waren Länder davon berührt, die sich vorher durch eine extrem dynamische Wirtschaftsentwicklung ausgezeichnet haben, wie z.B. Thailand, Malaysia, Philippinen und Süd-Korea. Der Ablauf der Krise und deren Ursachen sind insbesondere in der volkswirtschaftlichen Forschung (z.B. Fisher 1998, Goldstein 1998, Haggard 2000, Radelet und Sachs 1998, Woo, Sachs und Schwab 2000), aber auch in stärker politikwissenschaftlich orientierten Arbeiten intensiv studiert und aufgearbeitet worden (z.B. Jomo 1998, Henderson 1999, Pempel 1999, Wade und Veneroso 1998).1
