Elinor Ostrom studierte Politikwissenschaft an der Universität von Kalifornien in Los Angeles und promovierte dort 1965. Von 1965 an wirkte sie zunächst als Assistant Professor, von 1969 an als Associate Professor und von 1974 an als Professorin für Politikwissenschaft an der Universität von Indiana in Bloomington. Unter den zahlreichen Ehrungen Ostroms ragen drei besonders hervor: 1996/97 war sie Präsidentin der „American Political Science Association“, 1982–84 Präsidentin der „Public Choice Society“. Im Mai 2001 wurde sie in die „National Academy of Sciences“ berufen.
