Auszug
Vor ungefähr einem Jahr war ich2 wegen der Tagung der American Sociological Association in Chicago. Da ich am letzten Tag vor meiner Abreise noch einige Stunden Zeit erübrigen konnte, beschloss ich, eine kurze Stadtrundfahrt mit dem Bus zu machen, um einige der berühmten Orte früherer und heutiger Zeit zu sehen (z. B. die Viehhöfe, Wrigley Field usw.). Die Bustour drehte sich aber hauptsächlich um eine Reihe von Orten, die ich nicht nur in vielen anderen amerikanischen Städten sehen konnte, sondern auch in einigen Städten auf der ganzen Welt. Ich sah also (vom Busfenster aus) und wurde (von einem aufgeregten Fremdenführer) belehrt über solche „einzigartigen“ Orte wie McDonalds im Herzen Chicagos (zugegebenermaßen mit einem ganz besonderen Rock and Roll-Motiv), das Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood und das Rainforest Café. Von den alten Viehhöfen und erst recht von der Stelle, an der Mrs. O’Learys Kuh die Laterne umtrat und damit den großen Brand von Chicago auslöste, war weit und breit nichts zu sehen.
