EU-Beitritt und ökonomische Transformation in Osteuropa

Für die neuen osteuropäischen Mitglieder der EU stellt der im Mai 2004 vollzogene Beitritt nicht nur den formalen Abschluss der nach dem Zusammenbruch der staatssozialistischen Regime von den politischen Eliten proklamierten „Rückkehr nach Europa“ dar. Vielen Beobachtern innerhalb wie außerhalb Osteuropas gilt die Osterweiterung der EU auch als die symbolische Bekräftigung, dass in den Beitrittsländern der Übergang zu Marktwirt-schaft und Demokratie nunmehr abgeschlossen ist und die neuen EU-Mitglieder zu „normalen“ marktwirtschaftlichen Demokratien geworden sind.
