Zusammenfassung
Das Interesse an globalen Märkten kann auf eine lange Geschichte zurückblicken. Für manche Beobachter bestand schon vor über 150 Jahren kein Zweifel, dass es sie gibt und dass sie für die Beschreibung des modernen Wirtschaftslebens von grundlegender Bedeutung sind. „Die Bourgeoisie“, hieß es im kommunistischen Manifest, „hat durch ihre Exploitation des Weltmarkts die Produktion und Konsumption aller Länder kosmopolitisch umgestaltet“ (Marx & Engels 1999 [1848], S. 23). Die Rhetorik des Weltmarkts im mittleren 19. Jahrhundert darf als Vorbote der heutigen Globalisierungsdebatte gelten, in der ebenfalls häufig, aber viel selbstverständlicher von globalen Marktkräften die Rede ist (vgl. Stiglitz 2002). Wer heute in ökonomische Lehr- und Wörterbücher oder in Abhandlungen politischer Ökonomen hineinschaut, wird jedenfalls wenig Anlass finden, an der Existenz globaler Märkte und globalen Wettbewerbs auf jenen Märkten zu zweifeln. Die Welt, heißt es passend hierzu in der populären Globalisierungsliteratur, sei endgültig ‚flach‘ geworden und zwinge Marktteilnehmer überall auf der Welt erbarmungsloser als je zuvor in einen beschleunigten globalen Wettbewerb hinein (Friedman 2008 [2005]).
