Zusammenfassung
Armut im Weltmaßstab ist nicht nur ein Teil globaler sozialer Ungleichheit, sondern ihr prägendes Merkmal: Nahezu die Hälfte der Weltbevölkerung lebt nach der Einkommensdefinition der Weltbank in Armut, jeder fünfte Mensch sogar in extremer Armut. Der Beitrag erläutert die notwendigen Begrifflichkeiten (darunter vor allem das multidimensionale Armutsverständnis), die aktuelle empirische Armutssituation und Trends der vergangenen Jahre (inklusive regionaler und innergesellschaftlicher Disparitäten), wichtige Erklärungsansätze für Ursachen von Armut sowie staatliche bzw. multilaterale Ansätze der Armutsbekämpfung, insbesondere die Millennium Development Goals (MDG) und nationale Strategien (v.a. Poverty Reduction Strategies). Darüber hinaus wird zivilgesellschaftlichen Ansätzen der Armutsbekämpfung Raum gegeben.
