Culture of anxiety or culture of trust? Identity research in the bipolarity of aggression and peace

Abstract

All individual (i) and collective (c) experiences oscillate permanently in the bipolarity of anxiety and trust. This existential oscillation shapes the individual and collective life in a fundamental way as a permanent striving for trust (Hüther, 2005). In this context, social science identity research focuses on individual/ collective (i/c) experiences of anxiety and trust as well as on i/c strategies to overcome anxiety and their consequences (Coleman, 1990; Elias, 1997).
