Anti-Semitism in Austria and Germany – Commonalities and differences

Abstract

Anti-Semitism and racism are phenomena that again today are in the focus across Europe. Not only is xenophobia a cornerstone of European rightist populism, anti-Semitism as well has not at all vanished from right-wing populist ideologies and at present is more strongly manifest in Europe (cf. Merkl and Weinberg, 2003). Still, a comparison between Germany and Austria appears particularly interesting. The starting point for such a comparison is the common heritage of National Socialism: The countries’ populations were united by a broad consent for NS ideology and politics in which anti-Semitism played a significant role as much as racism. Following 1945, Germany was held responsible internationally as guilty of crimes.
